Policies

A large bureaucracy tends, if not restrained by Management, to legislate well beyond the needs of the business. A common reaction to failures in the organization is to introduce a new or amended policy. I remember how drinking was a positive value in Exxon(*) until the Exxon Valdez spill. After the event a Drug and Alcohol policy was implemented. It was so strict that I was forbidden my usual glass of wine during lunch, although this is a customary practice in my country, it does a lot of good to the health and my work did not have any safety-sensitive aspect. I consoled myself thinking that had the commander of Exxon Valdez been a drinker of coffee, I would have had to give up my espresso.

Over the years with the increase in policies defining so many things I wondered if instead of being an employee asked to perform a job, I were not a crusader or a missionary.

Getting frustrated and raising an issue (**)

A company policy asked employees to immediately report any situation where they felt uneasy because of the interference and in general the behaviour of another employee: the definition was very broad to encourage the employees to report all potential cases. The policy stated that all situations would be looked into by an independent function and that employees should not have fear of retaliation.

I reported a situation concerning myself in October 2000. I am still waiting the promised company feedback. C'est la vie!

C'est la vie! (**)

The President of Esso Italiana wrote to my provider that my web page stated that ExxonMobil management do not comply with their own policies. That is taking too far my example and it is not my intent. There is no large organization in world history (of a religious or political or business nature) which set policies with the deliberate intent of not complying with them, however these large organizations from time to time admitted that those in charge of preaching the policies, were the first to violate them.

(*) The words ExxonMobil, Exxon and Mobil are used in a generic sense. I actually worked since January 1, 1966 for Esso Standard Italiana Spa, subsequently renamed Esso Italiana Spa and Esso Italiana Srl. On April 5, 2001 I was notified that my contract had been sold on January 1, 2001 to another company named ExxonMobil Mediterranea Srl (previously a subsidiary of Mobil). Four days after this notification I left the company. Therefore I never had any direct legally binding agreement with Exxon Corporation or ExxonMobil Corporation.
